The programme committee will have a list of hosts available to choose from, but students can also look for external organisations themselves.

Yes. The programme committee will evaluate whether the proposal(s) fit in the curriculum.

Not necessarily.

Yes. Should another day work better in your or your (host) organisation’s schedule, this can be discussed with your promotor at the start of the programme.

• You need to start the application procedure and you also need to submit your application package before the deadline. You do not need to wait until you graduate. Instead of the legalised diploma and final transcripts/diploma supplement, you are required to submit upon application:
  • an official declaration from your school/university confirming the expected graduation date and the exact name of the diploma that will be awarded; and
  • your most recent transcript.
• If your application was successful, you are accepted at Ghent University and you will receive a letter of admission. This letter will mention that you will be required to submit a legalised copy of your diploma upon enrolment. 
• You cannot enrol if you have not yet obtained the diploma on the basis of which you have been granted admission.

Applicants must have a master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree of minimum 4 years from a university or recognised equivalent. A master’s degree in another field of study is not a problem, but a background in chemistry and mathematics is essential to follow the programme.

As long as you can demonstrate the necessary academic requirements, you are welcome to submit an application. Perhaps you received training on the job, or you took certain specialised classes over the years? All relevant information can help support your application. 

The programme committee evaluates the application and decides whether or not to invite you for an interview. The interview might include a practical test to evaluate your level of knowledge. 

Students with certain minor gaps in their educational background will be provided with extra learning materials (for example in microbiology or biochemistry).

If in doubt, do not hesitate to contact us before submitting an application. 

In the master’s programme, yes. You cannot obtain a master’s degree without completing a master’s dissertation.

If you prefer not to work on a master’s thesis, we recommend considering the postgraduate options.

Yes. The initial exams will be organised after a module, and if need be, re-examination moments will be organised based on the re-examination method, and the availability of students and the examinator.

No, the term ‘advanced’ refers to the fact that you need a master’s degree to apply for this programme.
The diploma will clearly indicate that the degree was obtained through a ‘Subsequent Master’s Programme’ (the Flemish master-na-master), but the official title of the degree remains ‘Master of Science’.

The interdisciplinary character of the programmes ensure that you are well prepared to pursue a career in a field related to Sustainability, Food and/or Packaging. Ample national and international job opportunities exist for Sustainable Food Packaging experts, situated in sectors such as the food industry, packaging industry, packaging machines producing industry, gas supplying industry, retail, the waste and recycling industry, government agencies and NGOs. You will be qualified to fill technical-, research- policy- and management-oriented positions.
